After thirteen years, our summer scholarship program for disadvantaged youth, Reach for the Sky July, is attaining its own 501(c)3 non-profit status.  This is to help us deepen our commitment to be able to offer these children and their families an on-going connection to positive choices, nurturing role models and real opportunities to find their artistic voices.

There is more and more research that confirms the positive effects of exposure to dance and the arts.  Our own Laura Peterson’s (Director of Dance) Master’s thesis, as well as several other important studies see offer consistent evidence that exposure to dance and theatre arts aids this population of children in moving more gently through challenging life situations, enhancing self perception and life satisfaction.

We have been under the umbrella of Friends of Youth for the last 13 years.  They are now working exclusively with the teenage population while we will continue to focus on 8-12 year old children.  We will continue our strong partnership with this organization in helping the youth of this community.

From our Reach summer program over the last 13 years we have had several children dance with us through the entire school year.  In observing these children succeed in learning the joys and discipline involved in dance instruction, we have seen the confidence they gain and their success in this area filter out to success in all other areas of their lives.  It is because of this observation we are now putting an invigorated effort into offering more scholarships to our summer campers throughout the school year.  In lives where there is often a lot of conflict and confusion the existence of consistency, a weekly nurturing support system and communication with positive role models is vital.  The opportunity for these children is only half of the equation.  Their lives and the direction they take effects all of our children and our community.
